Check out Anthony Cheung’s “Character Studies,” No. 1: “DRAMATIS PERSONAE” (2016).
Anthony incorporates some very cool extended violin techniques:
- scordatura (or cross tuning: in this case, you might notice that the d and g strings are lowered a half step, to c# and f#)
- microtonality (where I play the pitches in between the diatonic notes in the traditional Western scale)
- and playing behind the bridge (watch my bow and the pizzicato, or plucking, too — I tried very hard NOT to pull all the strings off of my violin, lol), among others.
- I went for a black and white vibe, too, to mix it up a little. 🙂
Also, BONUS TRIVIA QUESTION: what famous violin concerto does Cheung quote towards the end of this short gem? Comment below if you know the answer 🙂
I hope you enjoy!
